2026 Envirothon Competition
Southern Piedmont Envirothon
On March 17th & 18th, 24 middle school teams and 38 high school teams gathered at Dan Nicholas Park in Rowan County to compete in the Area VIII Southern Piedmont Envirothon. The Area VIII SPE competition consists of 12 Counties: Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Davidson, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, and Union. The Envirothon is a competitive event for middle and high school teams from public schools, private schools, and homeschools to compete in natural resources knowledge against other teams. It stimulates, reinforces and enhances students’ interest in the environment, our natural resources and emphasizes teamwork and higher order thinking skills such as analysis and interpretation. The competition tests the students’ knowledge and skills in the areas of aquatics, current environmental issues, forestry, soils and wildlife. The top seven teams from the middle and high school competition in this Area event will progress to the NC State Envirothon Competition in April to compete against teams from other areas of the State. This year, Davidson County had 2 middle school teams and 9 high school teams participating in this event. The High Rock Hammerheads placed 1st, and the High Rock Hellbenders placed 11th in the middle school competition. In the high school competition, the High Rock FFA Dr. Pepper Ducks placed 1st.
NC State Envirothon
The High Rock Hammerheads middle school team and the High Rock FFA Dr. Pepper Ducks high school team of High Rock Homeschool competed against teams from across the State in the State Envirothon Competition on April 24th and 25th in Alamance County. The Envirothon Program is a nationally recognized contest which tests students’ knowledge and skills in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife and current environmental issues. The Envirothon is a program of the National Conservation Foundation (NCF). It is a fun, hands-on natural science academic competition for teams, and is sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Students compete against other teams to excel and are rewarded for their teamwork efforts. The High Rock Hammerheads placed 1st at the middle school level, and the High Rock FFA Dr. Pepper Ducks were 3rd place at the high school level.
