2021 Envirothon Competitions

Teams from Davidson County public, private and home schools in the 6th through 12th grades are invited to participate in the Area VIII Southern Piedmont Envirothon Competition.  The SPE Committee is preparing options for holding the Southern Piedmont Envirothon either in-person or by using online testing if required by COVID-19 restrictions. The Envirothon Committee will follow recommended guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The top priority for the organizers is the health and safety of students, advisors, volunteers, sponsors, and education partners.  The 2021 SPE Competition is scheduled to be held at Dan Nichols Park in Rowan County on March 23rd for middle school teams and on March 24th for high school teams.

Students are tested for their knowledge in the areas of aquatics, current environmental issues, forestry, soils, and wildlife. The top seven winning teams from this area event will progress to the State Envirothon Competition to compete against teams from other areas of the state.

The State Envirothon Committee is assessing options for the State Envirothon Competition ranging from a socially-distanced, in-person event, to an entirely virtual event with online testing for teams.  The event is scheduled to be held on April 16th and 17th at Cedarock Park in Alamance County if conditions allow.

The Envirothon is a competitive event for middle and high school teams to compete in natural resources knowledge against other teams.  It stimulates, reinforces and enhances students' interest in the environment, our natural resources and emphasizes teamwork and high order thinking skills such as analysis and interpretation.

If COVID-19 restrictions do not allow for an in-person competition, testing will be online with efforts made to include online Oral Presentations for high school teams.

The winning high school team will be eligible to compete in the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon Competition in Nebraska.
